I missed the name of the fish he put in that were yellowish/tan with blue fins... what are those? They're quite fetching.

I've just ordered a few rainbow shiners which will go into a 1/2 barrel "pond". They will need to winter over inside. What is the minimum tank size for 12 of these fish. I'd like to be able to set it up so I can collect eggs as you have shown here. Please advise. I have not had an aquarium for several years. The last being a 110 gallon salt water set-up, which I sold. Thank You.

It's always a good idea to put the sand into a bucket and rinse the sand out to get rid of the dust particles before it goes in

i got into it a long time ago, and once i was set up i bought gold fish just to make suer the water was good well long story short thay stayed alive for 7 year and got up to 8 or 10 inches give or take. but was done after that.

Don't go over the top with clear water.I leave my small tank alone.Plenty of plants planted in soil sand and gravel.I have a filter tunning an bubbles of fresh air .The fish like to swim in the bubbles.I don't do cleaning anymore at the bottom of the tank.Sometimes leave well alone if the fish eat look happy swim about and don't die you are doing ok.

The solar pump is rubbish for a stream mate the fish one minute in a stream then when the sun goes in still !!! Not natural and fish will hate it !!!

do you have any tips on how to get rid of cloudiness in your pond from sand? I just set one up on Friday and its still very cloudy and low visibility. I thoroughly washed my sand before putting it in.

I'm not sure if I'm correct or not. But I was told by an English RUclips Fish keeper, that in the U.K. (where I live) you can't keep Ricefish (or you're not allowed to keep them outside, I think) So maybe that's why they aren't as popular over here. ☹ I think that it might be because they are so very resilient, and so very prolific with their breeding, that the British Wildlife Council doesn't want them getting into our waterway systems, because they could very well take over, and damage the Eco balance. But again, I'm not sure 😁

I've had good success with Pennywort (I have a lot of ambient light as my tanks are in a greenhouse - so keep that in mind) - it has literally taken over tanks, though the trimming is easy and can be infrequent if you don't mind a bit of time with some overgrowth. Also had good luck with both Frogbit and Salvinia. But I also have hard water - so I don't know if they are really in the bulletproof categorey.

Why does that look like a dead fish frozen?

I find it odd that people all talk about using just one method in a tank. You could honestly do the foreground with just sand and then put aqua soil or a soil/sand cap portion in the back for other plants. Everyone says “all tanks are different” but then they talk as if they have to use ONLY one substrate method for the entire bottom of the tank. Low maintenance plants that you don’t need to remove could use the soil/sand cap method and higher maintenance plants you pull up all the time could use the sand only method- and you could do both in the same tank, just separate areas. Heck tou could use 3 different substrate methods in a 75 gallon to create 3 different areas of the tank that have different plants that work best in each one. Seems like a fun experiment. I mean, in nature you have lakes that have areas with sand, areas with soil, and areas with gravel all in the same lake.

I was kind of hoping that with the word ‘portal’, you had managed to run fat tubes between all 3 planters, essentially making one big body of water, but this is cool. I think the fish are up in their viewing column because they want to see you and your dry world. Why not? We keep fish just to see them and their world, and any creature that’s a predator is going to be curious. Don’t throw out the plastic pots that the creeping Jenny came in, you can turn them upside down to support stuff like the columns or other semi-aquatic plants. I would like to see columns like this with Vallisnaria growing up into them. I think I need to set up my own!

Run a wooden or plastic stake down inside your plant pot and then use that to prop the glass jar.

Seriously though....I've been trying to get some live plants to put into my corner container pond, but it gets NO direct sunlight. It's actually a 75 gallon structure I building with paver blocks and a pond liner, with a HOB filter built in and a center fountain with a large sponge on the intake for additional biological/particle filtration. Any suggestions??? I'm in Maryland, so they won't survive the winter.

I’d love to get you some high quality Pseudomugils to work with as well, perhaps some lampeyes from Procatopodini grouping. These fish have the potential to be worked into cold/hot tolerant and hardy little aquarium fish.

why not just drop in a piece of wood? that would soften the water over time naturally.

so from what i know and have experienced with White clouds they dont eat their young or the young of other fish unless the white cloud is still young hence their breeding comes in waves 1 generation matures breeds and their young will eat the 3rd generation but by gen 4 they are all mature and breeding again. dont know if the albino ones tend to be more cannibalistic but my standard ones have bred and had their fry in the tank with them. started with just 5 fish .

Creeping Jenny can go crazy and start growing in and taking over lawn and flower beds. Be careful!
